How GUK is building community through innovation

At Ipswich’s Buttermarket shopping centre, a new initiative is making a big difference: the installation of a “Chatty Bench.” The concept is simple, anyone who sits there is open to a friendly chat, but its impact is far-reaching, helping to tackle loneliness and create a more welcoming community space.

The idea came from GUK Security Manager, Tyrone Candee, who noticed visitors sitting alone for long periods and often took the time to check in with them. Recognising an opportunity to make those moments of kindness more visible and accessible, Tyrone led the introduction of the Chatty Bench.

Prominently placed in the centre, the bench encourages conversation between shoppers, staff, and visitors. Sometimes it’s just a few words, but as Tyrone notes, “a small chat can make a big difference.”

The initiative has been warmly received by the public and the local media, and we recognised Tyrone’s leadership by naming him Employee of the Month in July.

For GUK, the Chatty Bench is more than a good idea — it reflects a core belief in adding value beyond traditional security services. By looking for ways to innovate and improve the spaces where we work, we not only keep people safe but also help build stronger, friendlier communities.
